Davis Cup: India to go head-to-head against Morocco in World Group II tie

Team India will take on Morocco in the Davis Cup World Group II tie on September 16 and 17, 2023. The latest to join the Indian team is India’s ace tennis player Rohan Bopanna, who recently finished runner-up in men’s doubles at the US Open men’s doubles. Matches will take place at the Vijayant Khand Mini Stadium in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow on Saturday and Sunday.

Rohan Bopanna is currently ranked seventh in the doubles world rankings. The 43-year-old is also the oldest player to compete in a Grand Slam final. Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden went down 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to the British-American duo of Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram in the summit clash at US Open 2023.

Rohan joined the team’s training on Wednesday. Bopanna has been a part of the Indian Davis Cup squad since 2002. The other members of the squad include Sumit Nagal, Sasikumar Mukund, Digvijay Pratap Singh, Yuki Bhambri and Ramkumar Ramanathan.

The addition of Bopanna surely brings experience of playing at major tournaments and the ability to handle crucial pressure. His presence will add value to the squad. Bopanna will pair up with Yuki Bhambri, who now plays only the doubles format.

We have a well-balanced team that combines experience and youth, and we are confident in our team’s ability to perform at its best,” said Rohit Rajpal, the non-playing captain of the Indian Davis Cup team and also the Executive Committee Member of Indian Olympic Association.

“Rohan Bopanna will join the team on Wednesday. His presence brings invaluable experience to the squad. We have a well-balanced team that combines experience and youth, and we are confident in our team’s ability to perform at its best,” Rajpal said.

The tie will also be the last for Bopanna. All India Tennis Association (AITA) President Anil Jain saidthat Bopanna will be given a memorable send-off in his farewell tie.

A win will ensure India’s place in the 2024 Davis Cup World Group I Play-offs. The matches will begin at 12 pm on Saturday and 11 am on Sunday.
