Hurricane Lee restrengthens in Atlantic Ocean; to impact Bermuda, Canada

Hurricane Lee has restrengthened in the Atlantic Ocean. Pilots aboard a “Gonzo” aircraft chased after Hurricane Lee on September 12 and experienced turbulence as the hurricane restrengthened in the Atlantic Ocean as it approached the U.S. Northeast.

Hurricane Lee is expected to bring dangerous surf and rip currents to the U.S. East Coast during the next days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Lee is still a powerful major hurricane centered about 550 miles south of the island of Bermuda, moving off towards the East Coast at about eight miles per hour (12,9 km per hour), National Hurricane Center Director Mike Brennan said.

He said, “Still a powerful major hurricane centered about 550 miles to the south of the island of Bermuda, still moving off to the west northwest now, rather slowly at about eight miles an hour.” The hurricane force winds now extend out almost 100 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds go out about 200 miles from the center, so Lee is growing in size, he further added.

Brennan warned that there is an increasing risk of some impacts in Bermuda, and expecting at least a couple of inches of rainfall. Hurricane Lee could see impacts in portions of New England and into Atlantic Canada later into the week and into the weekend.

There will also be an impact on the winds as tropical storm force winds. He also warned of some heavy rainfall, beach erosion, and potential coastal flooding.
