IAEA Director Grossi meets EAM S Jaishankar to discuss nuclear non-proliferation and international cooperation

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi discussed the developmental importance of nuclear energy on today October 23, 2023. Earlier, the Director General of IAEA was also welcomed on his arrival in India.

What is IAEA?

The IAEA is the world’s center for cooperation in the nuclear field, promoting the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technology. The statute of the IAEA was approved by the Conference on the Law of the International Atomic Energy Agency, held at the Headquarters of the United Nations on 23 October 1956 and it came into force on 29 July 1957.

The Foreign Minister shared information

They exchanged views on nuclear non-proliferation and international cooperation during a meeting in New Delhi.
Later, through a social media post in this regard, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that India will always be a strong and reliable partner of the IAEA.

IAEA Director Grossi on India visit

It is noteworthy that IAEA Director General Grossi has come to India on an official visit. This is his first visit to India as IAEA Director General. It is believed that his visit will further strengthen India-IAEA relations in various fields.

IAEA was raised as the world’s “Atoms for Peace” organization in 1957 within the family of the United Nations. One of the founding members of the IAEA is India. And as of 2019, India has put 26 reactors under the IAEA safeguards. India has also become the 35th country to join the IAEA Response and Assistance Network (RANET), a group of states which offer assistance to mitigate the consequences of nuclear or radiological emergencies.
