EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola condemned on Wednesday (October 18) the attack that left several hundred dead in a Gaza hospital.
Both leaders deplored the loss
of civilian life and said those responsible should be held accountable.
Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza, has blamed the blast on Israel. Israel says it was a result of a failed rocket launch by Palestinian Islamic Jihad, another militant group in the enclave.
While the EU and its member governments all condemned the Hamas assault from Gaza, which killed some 1,300 Israelis, they diverged on other political statements and policy implications.
The disarray has exposed old divisions within the EU on the Middle East and underscored the severe limits of its influence in the region.
