ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic ends year at No.1 for record 8th time

Twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic concluded the 2023 ATP season by securing the year-end No. 1 spot for a record eighth time.

Throughout the season, Djokovic triumphed in three out of the four Grand Slam tournaments, claiming victories at the Australian Open in January, the French Open in June, and the US Open in July. Additionally, he secured his record-breaking 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open in September and finished as the runner-up at Wimbledon.

The 36-year-old Serbian tennis star sealed his dominance by winning the ATP Finals in Turin after a gripping season-long battle with Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic’s historic 400th week at the top of the ATP Rankings commenced the day after his eighth ATP Finals win. Only Roger Federer, with 310 weeks, has surpassed the 300-week mark. Djokovic, with 15 year-end Top 3 finishes, tied Federer for the most such finishes. Remarkably, Djokovic’s reign atop the ATP Rankings totals 402 weeks, and he is set to retain the top spot until the week of January 22.

Alcaraz secured his second consecutive year-end Top 2 finish, while 20-year-old Holger Rune closed the season at No. 8. Notably, this marks the first instance since 2000, when 20-year-old Marat Safin (No. 2) and 19-year-old Lleyton Hewitt (No. 7) accomplished a year-end Top 10 finish at such a young age. Daniil Medvedev clinched the year-end No. 3 spot for the second time in three years.

Rising star Jannik Sinner, aged 22, ascended to a career-high No. 4 and claimed his maiden ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Toronto. Meanwhile, Andrey Rublev, winner of the ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte-Carlo, secured a Top 5 finish.

Stefanos Tsitsipas notched his fifth consecutive year-end Top 10 finish, while Alexander Zverev made a remarkable comeback to the Top 10 after recovering from a devastating ankle injury in June 2022. Polish player Hubert Hurkacz closed the season in the year-end Top 10 for the third consecutive year, leading the Tour in aces with 1,031.

The 2024 ATP Tour season is set to kick off on December 29 with the United Cup spanning 18 countries, taking place in Perth and Sydney, Australia.
