India is exploring innovative technologies, particularly small modular reactors (SMRs), in its strategic pursuit of clean energy, according to Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science & Technology. Singh made this announcement in response to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, emphasizing India’s commitment to transitioning towards clean energy.

In alignment with its broader strategy for industrial decarbonization, with a specific focus on sectors requiring a consistent power supply, India is contemplating measures for the development of small modular reactors. This move comes as part of a global initiative to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and has gained momentum due to the versatility of SMRs, renowned for their modularity, scalability, small footprint, and advanced safety features.

Small modular reactors are becoming an increasingly attractive option, especially for repurposing retiring coal-based thermal power station sites. Their unique advantages make them particularly suitable for locations where large nuclear plants are impractical. India’s goal is to generate low-carbon electricity, contributing to its overarching clean energy objectives through the deployment of SMRs. Importantly, it’s worth noting that SMRs are not envisioned as replacements for large-scale nuclear power plants but rather as valuable solutions for repurposing aging fossil fuel-based power plants.

Recognizing the promise of Small Modular Reactors, the government acknowledges that their techno-commercial aspects are still in the early stages globally. Large-scale deployment is contingent upon various factors, including global regulatory harmonization facilitated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with a specific emphasis on emergency planning zones and public acceptance.

In the face of the challenges associated with transitioning to sustainable energy sources globally, India’s proactive exploration of Small Modular Reactors underscores its commitment to addressing the increasing demand for clean and reliable power in the pursuit of a greener future.
