Addressing a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu commended the achievements of the Modi government over the past decade. She emphasized four pillars pivotal for India’s development: youth power, women power, farmers, and the poor.
President Murmu highlighted significant milestones, including the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, and the ban on triple talaq. She underscored the government’s focus on poverty alleviation, citing that 25 crore Indians have been lifted out of poverty in the last decade.
Economically, India transitioned from a fragile five to a top-five global economy, with controlled inflation, increased exports, and a strengthened banking system. India’s exports surged from about $450 billion to over $775 billion, and the number of people filing Income Tax Returns rose from around 3.25 crores to about 8.25 crores. She noted that government capital expenditure increased five times to ten lakh crore rupees in ten years, and the fiscal deficit is under control.
The President covered advancements in various sectors, including the successful G20 Summit, legislative achievements like the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, and initiatives like Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
She highlighted the implementation of One Rank One Pension, pending for four decades, benefitting ex-servicemen with around one lakh crore rupees.
The speech also addressed developments in infrastructure, defence, internal peace efforts, and initiatives for tribal communities. President Murmu reiterated the government’s commitment to human-centric development, social justice, and fair opportunities for all sections of society.
Education and skill development initiatives, the implementation of a new National Education Policy, and the establishment of AIIMS and medical colleges were discussed. India’s foreign policy, global standing, and commitment against terrorism were also emphasized.
Expressing confidence in meaningful policy discussions in the newly built Parliament building symbolizing Amrit Kaal and Ek Bharat, Shreshth Bharat, the session witnessed the swearing-in of Rajya Sabha members and the revocation of the suspension of 11 opposition members, notwithstanding findings of breach of privilege and contempt.
In the realm of foreign policy, President Murmu underscored India’s robust stance on global issues, emphasizing the country’s respected position in international organizations and its leading role in the fight against terrorism.
