The President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Dennis Francis, is set to visit India from January 22-26 at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Francis has outlined his presidency priorities, focusing on peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability. The overarching theme of his UNGA presidency is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting solidarity.”
During his visit, the PGA is scheduled to engage in talks with Jaishankar on critical multilateral issues of mutual interest. The discussions are expected to encompass a wide range of topics, including India’s call for comprehensive reforms within the United Nations, with a particular emphasis on the Security Council, aiming for increased equity and representation, especially for developing countries.
The itinerary for Francis includes paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat in New Delhi, underlining the importance of India’s historical commitment to peace and non-violence. Additionally, he will participate in a round table on India’s advancements in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), reflecting on the country’s strides in the digital realm.
The UNGA President will deliver a public address at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) on “Multilateralism and Peace, Prosperity, Progress, and Sustainability.” This speech is expected to shed light on the crucial role of multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges and fostering sustainable development.
Francis will also extend his visit beyond the capital, traveling to Jaipur and Mumbai. In Mumbai, he will pay floral tributes at the 26/11 memorial, commemorating the victims of the 2008 terrorist attacks. Additionally, he is scheduled to visit the National Stock Exchange and address a session on “New Orientation for Reformed Multilateralism,” organized by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).
The visit culminates on January 26 when the PGA will participate as a State guest in the Republic Day Parade of Maharashtra, underscoring the importance of India’s democratic traditions and its significant role on the global stage.
