In a bid to empower women in rural areas, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the expansion of the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ scheme in her interim budget presentation in Parliament. She said that the scheme’s target, originally set at 2 crore women, has now been raised to 3 crore women.

Sitharaman highlighted the transformative impact of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) on the rural socio-economic landscape, noting that 83 lakh SHGs, involving nine crore women, have played a pivotal role in fostering empowerment and self-reliance. The success of these groups has already propelled nearly one crore women into the category of ‘Lakhpati Didi,’ symbolizing financial independence. In recognition of their achievements, the finance minister announced plans to honour these women, who serve as inspiration to others.

Expressing confidence in the potential for further success, Sitharaman emphasized that the decision to increase the target for ‘Lakhpati Didi’ was motivated by the remarkable accomplishments of these women. She underscored the government’s commitment to focusing on the welfare and progress of four major categories – the ‘Garib’ (Poor), ‘Mahilayen’ (Women), ‘Yuva’ (Youth), and ‘Annadata’ (Farmer).

“Our Prime Minister firmly believes that the country progresses when these four segments progress. Their needs, aspirations, and welfare are our highest priority,” said the Finance Minister. She reiterated that all four groups continue to receive government support in their pursuit of a better life, and their empowerment and well-being will serve as catalysts for national development.
