India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, has voiced strong criticism against the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for its failure to resolve the prolonged conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has persisted for over two years.
During a session of the United Nations General Assembly discussing the situation in Ukraine, Kamboj emphasized the urgent need to overhaul “outdated and archaic structures” within the UN. She reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that “this is not an era of war” and expressed India’s deep concern over the ongoing conflict.
Despite diplomatic efforts, Kamboj raised doubts about the effectiveness of the UNSC, the primary body responsible for maintaining global peace and security, in bringing an end to the conflict. She called for comprehensive reforms to modernize multilateral frameworks and enhance their efficacy.
Kamboj urged member states to remain committed to common objectives in pursuit of development goals and stressed the importance of intensified cooperation to accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Quoting Prime Minister Modi’s stance, Kamboj said, “I will reiterate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion that ‘this is not an era of war’. We must remain focused on our shared objectives to achieve our development goals and the partnership and cooperation that we will need for achieving these.”
Regarding India’s stance on the Ukraine crisis, Kamboj highlighted India’s unwavering position against escalating violence, emphasizing the need for a swift return to dialogue and diplomacy.
Highlighting the significance of inclusive engagement for sustainable peace, Kamboj emphasized the importance of maintaining open diplomatic channels. She noted India’s efforts during its G20 presidency to address economic challenges confronting developing nations, reaffirming India’s people-centric approach to the Ukraine conflict.
Kamboj said: “India’s G20 presidency has ensured that some of those economic pitfalls faced by developing countries were brought to the forefront of the G20 agenda, and through a consensus-based approach, a roadmap agreed upon which also provided solutions for countries facing debt distress. Looking ahead, India’s approach to the Ukraine conflict will continue to be people-centric.”
Kamboj highlighted India’s humanitarian aid to Ukraine and assistance to neighboring countries facing economic hardships. She cautioned against actions that could hinder prospects for dialogue and negotiation, urging all parties to prioritize peaceful resolutions.
