The Department of Computer Science at Punjabi University has introduced “PURAN,” an innovative system designed to enhance the typing experience of the Gurmukhi script on the internet.
Developed by Gurjot Singh Mahi under the guidance of Dr. Amandeep Verma, this breakthrough offers users contextually relevant sentence suggestions across various topics.
Notably, the system earned the title of “Best Research Paper” at the International Conference on “New Emerging Trends in Engineering” in Kozhikode, Kerala, underlining its potential for global impact.
“PURAN” not only suggests sentences but also ensures their relevance to the user’s intended topic. This development fills a notable gap in linguistic technology research, particularly for local dialects.
While similar systems exist for the English language, the focus on the Gurmukhi script sets “PURAN” apart, promising a more inclusive and accessible digital landscape for Punjabi speakers.
The system’s functionality is straightforward yet transformative. As users type a sentence, “PURAN” offers complete suggestions tailored to their specific topic. With a simple click, users can access fully formed sentences, streamlining the writing process and facilitating clearer communication in the Gurmukhi script.
Gurjot Singh Mahi, the driving force behind this innovation, emphasized the importance of employing models and methods that yield optimal results. Through meticulous research and development, “PURAN” emerged as the most user-friendly and effective solution, showcasing a fusion of technological prowess and linguistic finesse.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Arvind lauded this achievement as a pivotal step towards modernizing the Punjabi language. He reiterated the necessity of such research endeavors in ensuring the vitality and relevance of regional languages in the digital age.
This pioneering system propels the Gurmukhi script into the digital realm, not only enhancing the typing experience but also contributing to the preservation and proliferation of linguistic diversity online.
