The comprehensive maritime security exercise ‘Sea Defenders-2024’ between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and United States Coast Guard (USCG) successfully concluded at Port Blair on March 9. The exercise aimed at enhancing maritime cooperation and interoperability between the two forces, showcasing their expertise in various scenarios.
One of the highlights of the exercise was the Pollution Response Demonstration, where Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft displayed their proficiency in responding to oil spills and other environmental hazards at sea. Additionally, simulated Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) Operations were conducted to inspect vessels suspected of illegal activity.
The exercise featured Search & Rescue and Pollution Response demonstrations by the Indian Coast Guard helicopter and Dornier aircraft, emphasizing their aerial surveillance and rescue capabilities. Furthermore, practice sessions were held to neutralize asymmetric threats, such as drone attacks on commercial merchant traffic.
Moreover, the exercise provided a platform for both USCG and ICG personnel to enhance their firefighting and damage control skills through simulated scenarios. The DCFF teams demonstrated their capabilities to combat shipboard emergencies effectively.
Following the exercise, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf departed from Port Blair after engaging in a series of harbor activities and sea exercises designed to foster collaboration. These activities included cross-visits, where crew members from both vessels toured each other’s ships, gaining insights into capabilities and procedures. Additionally, a friendly badminton competition was organized to encourage interaction and camaraderie among the crews.
