The Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Tuesday following a contentious session that saw the adoption of a motion condemning opposition behavior during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address. The adjournment came after the House passed the motion of thanks on the President’s address, which included PM Modi’s reply to the debate.

Throughout the Prime Minister’s speech, opposition members persistently raised slogans concerning the situation in Manipur, creating a tense atmosphere in the chamber. This led to an unprecedented move by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who introduced a motion criticizing the opposition’s conduct immediately after PM Modi’s address concluded.

Speaker Om Birla said the conduct of opposition members was not in accordance with the parliamentary traditions. He emphasised that the House runs according to rules and will do so.

Home Minister Amit Shah lent his support to Rajnath Singh’s motion, which was subsequently adopted by voice vote, marking a rare instance of formal parliamentary censure of opposition conduct.

This was the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha after the results of the Lok Sabha polls earlier this month. The session began on June 24 with oath-taking by the new members.

The BJP-led NDA formed its third successive government following the Lok Sabha polls. While the NDA won 293 seats, the opposition INDIA bloc won 243 seats.
