Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Austria on July 9-10 marked a historic event as it was the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 41 years. The visit also coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Austria, underscoring the long-standing ties between the two nations.
During his visit, PM Modi met with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and held discussions with Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The leaders emphasized their shared commitment to democracy, freedom, and international peace, and vowed to strengthen cooperation on bilateral, regional, and international levels to foster a more stable and prosperous world.
The two leaders agreed to enhance their partnership, focusing on economic and technological collaboration. They highlighted the importance of joint projects in green and digital technologies, infrastructure, renewable energy, water management, life sciences, smart cities, mobility, and transportation.
PM Modi and Chancellor Nehammer stressed the need for democratic countries like India and Austria to work together for international and regional peace. They noted the regular consultations between their Foreign Ministers and encouraged continued institutional dialogue in various areas.
They affirmed their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region, respecting international maritime laws. Both leaders discussed recent developments in Europe and West Asia, emphasizing the need for peace and adherence to international law.
Concerning the Ukraine conflict, both leaders endorsed collective efforts for a peaceful resolution. They unequivocally condemned terrorism in all forms and urged decisive action against terrorists, including through UN sanctions. They also recalled the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor initiative launched during the G20 summit in Delhi and discussed Austria’s interest in engaging with this strategic project.
PM Modi and Chancellor Nehammer identified stronger economic and technological ties as a strategic goal. They welcomed the first high-level bilateral Business Forum held in Vienna, encouraging business leaders to explore dynamic partnerships.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of research, technology development, and innovation. They highlighted the Start-Up Bridge initiative and the exchange of start-ups between India and Austria, urging further collaboration in areas like renewable energy, water management, and clean technologies.
Recognizing their commitments to climate action, the leaders discussed opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy and green hydrogen. They emphasized the need for partnerships in clean transportation, water management, waste management, and other environmental technologies.
PM Modi and Chancellor Nehammer highlighted the importance of skill development and the mobility of skilled workers. They welcomed the bilateral Migration and Mobility Agreement, facilitating exchanges while combating irregular migration.
The leaders appreciated the rich tradition of cultural exchanges and the growing interest in yoga and Ayurveda in Austria. They encouraged efforts to promote bilateral cultural ties and tourism, including expanding direct flight connectivity.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to achieving comprehensive reforms of the United Nations, including its Security Council. India reiterated its support for Austria’s UNSC candidature for the term 2027-28, while Austria expressed its support for India’s candidature for the period 2028-29.. PM Modi invited Austria to join the International Solar Alliance, which recently welcomed its 100th member.
PM Modi thanked Chancellor Nehammer for the warm hospitality and extended an invitation for him to visit India, which the Chancellor accepted with pleasure.
