National Sports Day: Mansukh Mandaviya honors hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand with floral tribute

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday paid floral tributes to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. His birth anniversary, observed on August 29, is celebrated each year as National Sports Day.

Known as ‘The Wizard’ of hockey, Major Dhyan Chand represented the Indian national team from 1925 to 1949, scoring over 1,500 goals in 185 matches as a centre forward. His illustrious career includes three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. In recognition of his contributions to Indian sports, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956.

Speaking at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi, Mandaviya emphasized the significance of fitness and health for national development, urging everyone to dedicate one hour to participate in their favorite sport.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to Major Dhyan Chand, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting sports at all levels. PM Modi emphasized the goal of creating an ecosystem where every young Indian can aspire to excel in sports.

In a post on X, PM Modi said: “Greetings on National Sports Day. Today we pay homage to Major Dhyan Chand Ji. It is an occasion to compliment all those passionate about sports and those who have played for India. Our Government is committed to supporting sports and ensuring more youth are able to play and shine.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also honoured Major Dhyan Chand. In a post on X, Shah said: “I pay my tribute to the Hockey Magician, Major Dhyan Chand, on his birth anniversary and wish all countrymen a Happy ‘National Sports Day.’ Major Dhyan Chand’s life is a symbol of the fact that any goal can be achieved with unwavering dedication and continuous practice. He not only elevated Indian hockey to great heights but also inspired a positive consciousness towards sports in the country. This brilliant player of the sports world will always guide future generations.”

Meanwhile, Major Dhyan Chand’s son, Olympian Ashok Kumar, unveiled a statue of his father in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, on Thursday.
