Indian Army enhances armoured capability with overhaul of T-90 tanks

In a significant advancement under the “Decade of Transformation”, General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, attended the rollout ceremony for the overhauled T-90 Bhishma tank at the 505 Army Base Workshop in Delhi Cantonment on October 7. This initiative reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to ensuring the operational readiness of its armoured formations.

The T-90 Bhishma, a mainstay of India’s mechanized forces since 2003, is acclaimed for its firepower, mobility, and protection. The overhaul process involves a meticulous disassembly of the tank, allowing for comprehensive rebuilding. Over 200 assemblies and sub-assemblies are carefully removed and reconstructed using precise machining and resetting techniques.

Technicians at the 505 Army Base Workshop, part of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), utilized custom machinery and Test Benches provided by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to independently rebuild and rigorously test the tank’s mechanical, electronic, and instrumental components. Each part undergoes thorough assessment with Automated Test Equipment (ATEs) before being reassembled, ensuring the tank is primed for all-terrain operations.

General Dwivedi commended the dedication and skill of the EME technicians and officers, urging them to continue innovating and excelling in future projects.

This successful overhaul not only highlights India’s indigenous capabilities in maintaining critical warfighting platforms but also aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasizing the nation’s goal of a self-reliant and technologically advanced defence force.

Through strategic efforts in defence manufacturing and maintenance, the Indian Army aims to elevate its operational capabilities significantly.
