Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu experienced severe waterlogging on Monday following heavy rainfall, with several areas of the city inundated.

Local authorities are assessing the situation and working to mitigate the impact of the flooding, according to district officials.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy rainfall across several districts in Tamil Nadu on Monday, due to a low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

The IMD said that the low-pressure system is expected to intensify and move northwest towards northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh within the next two days.

“Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Dharmapuri, Salem, Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirapalli, Karur, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram districts,” the IMD said in a statement.

Chennai and its surrounding areas are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall as the northeast monsoon is expected to set in by October 15 or 16. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is likely to fully withdraw over the next four days.

The IMD has issued an advisory for fishermen, urging them to avoid venturing into the sea until October 17 due to rough seas and gusty winds.
