Ministry of External Affairs | Randhir Jaiswal | Adani Group

“No request from US on Adani case,” says MEA on alleged bribery allegations

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified on Friday that India has not received any request from the United States regarding the alleged bribery case involving top executives of the Adani Group.

Spokesperson for the MEA, Randhir Jaiswal, addressed the media during the weekly press briefing, stating that the allegations against the Adani Group’s executives were a legal matter involving private firms and individuals, as well as the US Department of Justice.

Jaiswal explained that established legal procedures and avenues are followed in such cases, and the Indian government was not informed in advance about the issue. He further emphasized that any request by a foreign government for the service of summons or arrest warrants falls under the framework of mutual legal assistance, and such requests are examined on their merits. “We have not received any request on this case from the US side,” Jaiswal said.

The spokesperson reiterated that the matter pertains to private individuals and entities, and the Government of India is not legally involved at this stage.

The Adani Group, in its response to the ongoing allegations, has strongly refuted claims of bribery made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The accusations involve the group’s founder and Chairman, Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and Vineet Jaain, Managing Director and CEO of Adani Green Energy.

Adani Green Energy Ltd, in its filing to the stock exchanges, dismissed media reports regarding the alleged bribery charges, labeling the reports as “incorrect.” The company said, “Media articles which state that certain of our directors, namely Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani, and Vineet Jain, have been charged with violations of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in the indictment are incorrect.”

Recently, a five-count criminal indictment was unsealed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, linking high-profile Indian executives, including Gautam Adani, to an alleged bribery and fraud scheme.
