Committed to improving connectivity across country, says PM Modi as Cabinet approves Rithala-Kundli metro corridor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday highlighted government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity across the nation following the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Rithala-Kundli corridor under the fourth phase of the Delhi Metro project in the National Capital Region.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “We are committed to improving connectivity across the country. In this direction, our government has approved the Rithala-Kundli corridor under the fourth phase of Delhi Metro in the National Capital Region. This will make commuting between Delhi and Haryana easier.”

According to a Cabinet release, the 26.463 km Rithala-Narela-Nathupur (Kundli) corridor, approved under Phase IV of the Delhi Metro project, will enhance connectivity between Delhi and neighboring Haryana. The project, to be implemented by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC)—a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi—has an estimated cost of ₹6,230 crore and is expected to be completed in four years.

This extension of the Red Line, which currently operates from Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) to Rithala, will include 21 elevated stations, connecting areas such as Narela, Bawana, and parts of Rohini. It will also link the Shaheed Sthal New Bus Adda station in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Nathupur in Haryana via Delhi, significantly enhancing regional connectivity within the National Capital Region (NCR).

“The new corridor will not only reduce road congestion but also help mitigate vehicular pollution. Moreover, the extension will spur economic growth in the region,” the release added.

The proposed stations along this corridor include Rithala, various sectors of Rohini, Bawana Industrial Area, Narela, and Nathupur. This marks Delhi Metro’s fourth extension into Haryana, following its reach into Gurugram, Ballabhgarh, and Bahadurgarh.

Currently, construction is ongoing for Phase IV’s three priority corridors, spanning 65.202 km with 45 stations. Over 56% of the construction work has been completed, with full completion targeted by March 2026. Two additional corridors, covering 20.762 km, are in the pre-tendering stages.

Delhi Metro, serving an average of 64 lakh passenger journeys daily, recorded its highest passenger count of 78.67 lakh on November 18, 2024. The system continues to set benchmarks in punctuality, reliability, and safety, earning its reputation as the city’s lifeline.
