At just 18 years old, Gukesh achieved this remarkable feat on Thursday, defeating China’s Ding Liren in the final game of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) World Championship 2024.
With scores tied at 6.5-6.5 heading into the decisive game, Gukesh delivered a stellar performance under immense pressure, clinching victory with a final score of 7.5-6.5. This triumph makes him the 18th chess world champion and a beacon of inspiration for millions around the globe.

“Historic and exemplary! Congratulations to Gukesh D on his remarkable accomplishment. This is the result of his unparalleled talent, hard work, and unwavering determination. His triumph has etched his name in the annals of chess history and inspired millions to dream big and pursue excellence.”
Former world champion Viswanathan Anand, who mentored Gukesh in his early career, expressed immense pride. “It’s a proud moment for chess, for India, for WACA, and for me personally. Ding played a very exciting match, showcasing the champion he is,” said Anand.
Indian sports icons also joined in the celebration. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar remarked, “In a game of 64 squares, you’ve opened a world of endless possibilities. Congratulations, @DGukesh, on becoming the 18th World Champion at just 18! You’re guiding the next wave of Indian chess prodigies.”

Gukesh’s path to the world title has been exceptional. His relentless focus culminated in a victory over Ding Liren, a reigning champion and formidable opponent.
At the post-match press conference, an emotional Gukesh called it the “best moment of his life.” Reflecting on the match, Ding said, “I was in shock when I realized I made a blunder. I think I played my best tournament of the year. It could be better, but I have no regrets.”
