The Delhi Police conducted extensive nighttime search operations across slum areas in the national capital on Wednesday as part of an intensified effort to identify Bangladeshi infiltrators, according to officials.
West Delhi DCP Vichitra Veer explained that the searches were carried out at night to ensure families were home, making the verification process more efficient. “The purpose of conducting the campaign at night is that people go to work during the day. At night, all family members are at home, which simplifies verification,” DCP Veer said. He added that the deportation process for 10 Bangladeshi nationals from West Delhi has already begun, with similar measures being implemented in other districts.
The operation comes amid mounting criticism from the BJP, which has accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of facilitating voter ID and Aadhaar cards for Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants to secure votes.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena has also raised alarm over the increasing involvement of illegal immigrants in criminal activities. His concerns follow a recent case in Mumbai, where a Bangladeshi national was arrested for a break-in and assault involving actor Saif Ali Khan.
Responding to these concerns, Saxena directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to initiate a special campaign aimed at identifying and apprehending illegal immigrants. In a letter dated January 20, the L-G Secretariat emphasized the importance of public awareness in ensuring security.
“An outreach programme may be launched through print and social media to educate the public on the need for verification of employees, domestic help, and workers, including construction laborers, in the interest of their own security,” the letter stated.
