illegal immigration | Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar

Vice-President Dhankhar highlights challenges of illegal migration and calls for national unity

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday raised concerns about the growing issue of illegal migration, warning that it is escalating to unmanageable levels, threatening India’s electoral systems and straining essential resources.

Addressing the students of NIT Raipur, IIT Bhilai, IIM Raipur on the theme- “Ideas for building Better Bharat” at Raipur, Dhankhar underscored the severe economic and social impacts of illegal migration, highlighting its strain on employment, education, healthcare, and other sectors.

“Illegal migration in millions is a monstrous problem that requires immediate resolution. Every passing day adds complexity to this issue,” he said. The vice-president called for prioritising the nation over petty political gains and urged a resolute approach to tackle this growing concern.

Dhankhar also emphasised the need for political and social consensus on critical issues like the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He pointed out that the UCC is enshrined in the Directive Principles of State Policy and urged stakeholders to view it as a constitutional obligation rather than a divisive agenda.

The vice-president expressed concern over orchestrated demographic disruptions and conversions aimed at destabilising democracy. While respecting individual rights, Dhankar cautioned against demographic manipulation driven by allurements. He called for proactive efforts to maintain organic demographic harmony.

Institutional roles and political consensus

Highlighting the importance of institutional harmony, Dhankhar stressed that each organ of the state—the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary—must function within its constitutionally defined boundaries. “No institution should interfere in the roles of others. Democracy thrives on mutual respect and restraint,” he noted.

The vice-president urged political parties to resolve differences through dialogue and consensus on issues like nationalism, development, and security. Drawing inspiration from India’s ancient tradition of structured debates, he emphasised the need for collective wisdom in addressing national challenges.

The vice-president condemned the destruction of public property and disruptions to public order. Referring to incidents like the vandalism of Vande Bharat trains, he stressed the need for exemplary punishment and financial accountability for perpetrators. “Such actions bring no honour to our nation. Young people must use the power of social media to name and shame those responsible,” he added.
