PM Modi unveils design of new integrated terminal building of Guwahati Airport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday unveiled the design of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati during the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, officials said.

A spokesperson from LGBI Airport described the unveiling as a key step in transforming the airport into a world-class aviation hub and a gateway to Northeast India.

“Inspired by Assam’s natural beauty, the new terminal features a unique Bamboo Orchids theme, symbolising biodiversity, strength, and sustainability. The terminal’s design seamlessly blends with the landscape, celebrating the region’s cultural and natural heritage,” the spokesperson said.

The official highlighted that the use of bamboo and orchids reflects the airport’s commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness.

Currently under construction, the NITB is designed to accommodate 13.1 million passengers per annum (MPPA), becoming the first airport terminal of its kind in Northeast India. The terminal is expected to be operational in the last quarter of 2025, the spokesperson added.

Spanning an area of 140,000 square metres, the terminal will offer facilities and amenities not previously seen in the region. With the capacity to handle 13.1 MPPA, it represents a sixfold increase over the design capacity of the existing terminal.

During the unveiling, Prime Minister Modi was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), the LGBI Airport is named after Assam’s first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi. Serving as a vital gateway to the northeastern states, the airport connects the region to key domestic and international destinations.

In addition to its enhanced infrastructure, Guwahati Airport offers a range of services, including retail outlets, dining options, lounges, and business facilities, ensuring a comfortable experience for travellers.
