Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid homage to India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on his death anniversary.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Tributes to our former PM, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary.”
Born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad, Pandit Nehru played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle and post-Independence development. A prominent leader of the Indian National Congress, he was mentored by Mahatma Gandhi, who declared Nehru as his political successor.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described Nehru as “a great statesman and humanist” and the “visionary architect of modern India.” In her message, she said, “His ideas will continue to inspire all who love democracy.”
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar stated, “Remembering the visionary leader and the first Prime Minister of independent India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, on his death anniversary. His contribution to nation-building remains unparalleled.”
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) president Sharad Pawar highlighted Nehru’s role in laying the foundation of scientific thinking, secularism, and democratic values in India. He said, “Nehru’s emphasis on holistic development and balanced foreign policy continues to remain relevant even today.”
Nehru became India’s interim Prime Minister in 1946 and took oath as the first Prime Minister of independent India on August 15, 1947. On that historic day, he delivered his iconic ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech and unfurled the Indian tricolour at the Red Fort.
As Congress President in 1929, Nehru had called for complete independence from British rule, setting the tone for India’s final phase of the freedom movement.
Pandit Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964, following a heart attack. His death was formally announced in the Lok Sabha the same afternoon.
In honour of his deep affection for children, Nehru’s birthday—November 14—is celebrated annually as Children’s Day across the country.
