The Embassy of India in Tehran has issued a fresh advisory urging Indian citizens to avoid travelling to Iran amid ongoing regional tensions and uncertainty surrounding flight operations.
In a post on X, the Embassy said Indian nationals are “strongly advised not to travel to Iran, whether by air or land,” citing continued airspace restrictions and operational challenges affecting international flights to and from the country.
The advisory also reiterated that Indian citizens currently in Iran should leave through designated land border routes, in close coordination with the Embassy, which is facilitating safe movement amid the evolving situation.
Providing an update on evacuation efforts, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)Additional Secretary (Gulf) Aseem R Mahajan on Thursday said the Embassy in Tehran has been assisting Indian nationals in exiting via neighbouring countries such as Armenia and Azerbaijan for onward travel to India.
“So far, 2,428 Indian nationals have moved out of Iran into Armenia and Azerbaijan. This includes 1,096 Indian students and 657 Indian fishermen,” he said during an inter-ministerial briefing on developments in West Asia.
Mahajan added that Iran’s airspace remains only partially open, primarily for cargo and chartered flights, while commercial flight operations continue to face disruptions.
Despite the challenges, the broader aviation situation in the region is gradually improving. Since February 28, around 12.12 lakh passengers have travelled from West Asia to India, aided by the operation of additional flights on key routes.
The Embassy has also shared emergency contact details and email support for Indian nationals seeking assistance, as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and prioritise the safe return of citizens.
