Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm greetings to the nation on the occasion of Poila Boishakh, highlighting the festival as a celebration of West Bengal’s rich cultural heritage and its contribution to India’s civilisational ethos.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Shubho Noboborsho! Best wishes on Poila Boishakh.”
“I pray that the coming year marks the fulfilment of all your wishes. May the spirit of happiness and brotherhood always prevail. Wishing you good health and lots of happiness. This is also an occasion to celebrate the timeless richness of West Bengal’s culture that has shaped India’s civilisational spirit,” he added.
Poila Boishakh, also known as Nobo Borsho, marks the beginning of the Bengali New Year and is one of the most significant festivals for the Bengali community. Celebrated with enthusiasm across states such as West Bengal, Tripura, Jharkhand and Assam, the festival symbolizes new beginnings, prosperity and optimism. This year, it marks the start of the Bengali calendar year 1433.
The day is considered highly auspicious, with many people choosing the occasion to begin new ventures, make major purchases such as homes or vehicles, and initiate business activities. It also holds special importance for the Bengali business community, which traditionally offers prayers to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi seeking prosperity in the year ahead.
Celebrations are marked by vibrant cultural traditions and community participation. People dress in traditional attire – women in sarees and men in kurtas – visit friends and family, exchange greetings and prepare festive meals. Processions, folk music, dance performances and village fairs add to the festive spirit, while handicrafts exhibitions showcase Bengal’s artistic heritage.
Devotees also visit temples, observe rituals and offer prayers, reinforcing the spiritual significance of the occasion. The festival brings together communities in a shared spirit of joy, renewal and cultural pride, reflecting the enduring richness of Bengal’s traditions.
