Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid homage to 12th-century philosopher and social reformer Jagadguru Basaveshwara on the occasion of Basava Jayanthi
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “On the special occasion of Basava Jayanthi, paying homage to Jagadguru Basaveshwara and his enduring teachings. His vision of a just society, along with his unwavering efforts to empower the people, will always motivate us.”
Basaveshwara, also known as Basavanna, is widely revered as a pioneer of social reform in India and a key figure of the 12th-century Bhakti movement centred on Lord Shiva. His teachings, often conveyed through poetic compositions known as Vachanas, emphasised equality, social justice, and devotion.
His philosophy promoted the idea of a direct and personal connection with the divine through the concept of the Ishtalinga, transcending social divisions.
Basaveshwara also established the Anubhava Mantapa, regarded as a pioneering forum for open dialogue, where people from diverse backgrounds, including women, could participate in discussions on spiritual and social issues.
Remembered as a champion of equality and a voice for the underprivileged, his teachings continue to resonate across generations, inspiring efforts towards building a more just and inclusive society.
