Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday underscored the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance, describing it as a powerful tool to build an inclusive, efficient and future-ready India.
Delivering the 5th Dr. Rajendra Prasad Memorial Lecture on “AI for Good Governance” at the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) during its 72nd Founders’ Day celebrations, V-P Radhakrishnan said, “Artificial Intelligence is empowering governments to serve better than ever before.”
Tribute to Dr. Rajendra Prasad
Paying homage to Rajendra Prasad, the Vice President recalled his unwavering commitment to principles and public service. Referring to his visit to the Somnath Temple despite opposition, he highlighted Dr. Prasad’s moral courage and integrity.
V-P Radhakrishnan noted that his life exemplified that governance is fundamentally about service, not power.
AI redefining governance
Emphasising the ongoing technological transformation, the Vice President said the world is witnessing a new era driven by AI. “Artificial Intelligence is not just a technological revolution, it is a human revolution,” he remarked.
V-P Radhakrishnan added that AI is enabling governments to better understand and respond to citizens’ needs, making governance faster, smarter and more transparent.
Key to Viksit Bharat vision
Highlighting AI’s role in India’s development journey, the Vice President said, “AI is an enabler for building a Viksit Bharat that is inclusive, efficient, and future-ready.”
V-P Radhakrishnan further said, “India is at the forefront of leveraging AI which strengthens the vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”
The Vice President said that AI is bridging the gap between policy and people through data-driven decision-making and targeted delivery of welfare schemes.
Expanding AI applications across sectors
V-P Radhakrishnan highlighted the growing use of AI across sectors including healthcare, agriculture, MSMEs, cybersecurity, and governance.
He cited examples such as AI-assisted tuberculosis screening, portable X-ray devices, and telemedicine platforms like eSanjeevani, which are improving healthcare access.
The Vice President also pointed to India’s AI-powered language platform BHASHINI, which is helping overcome language barriers and promote inclusive governance.
Strengthening India’s AI ecosystem
V-P Radhakrishnan noted that India ranks among the top countries globally in AI development and innovation. He highlighted key initiatives such as the India AI Mission and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation aimed at strengthening the country’s technological capabilities.
Encouraging youth and professionals to embrace emerging technologies, the Vice President stressed the importance of building an AI-ready workforce through initiatives like Skill India and the National Education Policy.
Ethical use of AI stressed
While advocating wider adoption of AI, the Vice President cautioned against its misuse, stressing the need for ethical frameworks.
He said AI must be guided by fairness, accountability and responsibility to ensure it benefits humanity.
Call for collective action
In his concluding remarks, V-P Radhakrishnan urged all stakeholders to harness AI for good governance and nation-building, calling for a balanced approach that combines innovation with responsibility.
He emphasised that AI has the potential to create a more just, inclusive and compassionate society if used wisely.
