External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in New Delhi and discussed the evolving situation in West Asia, regional security concerns and bilateral issues of mutual interest.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting being hosted in the national capital under India’s 2026 chairship.
Following the talks, EAM Jaishankar said in a post on X that the two leaders had a detailed discussion on developments in West Asia and their wider implications.
“Had a detailed conversation with FM Abbas Araghchi of Iran this morning in Delhi. Discussed the situation in West Asia and its implications. Also exchanged views on bilateral issues of mutual interest. Appreciate his participation in BRICS India 2026,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also met the Iranian Foreign Minister on Thursday on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
The engagement assumes significance as it comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia and marks one of the first high-level diplomatic interactions involving India since the conflict involving Iran intensified.
Addressing the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on Thursday, Jaishankar underlined concerns over the fragile security environment in West Asia and the impact of tensions on maritime traffic and energy infrastructure.
“The conflict in West Asia merits particular attention. Continuing tensions, risks to maritime traffic, and disruptions to energy infrastructure highlight the fragility of the situation,” the EAM said.
He stressed that safe and uninterrupted maritime flows through international waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, remain crucial for global economic stability.
Reaffirming India’s position on international conflicts, Jaishankar said respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity must remain the foundation of international relations.
“Dialogue and diplomacy are the only sustainable means of resolving conflicts,” he added.
During his address at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, Araghchi urged the international community to condemn what he described as violations of international law by the United States and Israel.
The Iranian Foreign Minister alleged that Iran had been subjected to “brutal and unlawful aggression” and said the attacks were being justified through “false claims”.
Araghchi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a three-day official visit, marking Tehran’s first major diplomatic outreach since tensions in West Asia escalated.
