PM Modi, Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson pitch stronger India-Sweden partnership for green growth and sustainable future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson outlined a new roadmap for deeper India-Sweden cooperation focused on green transition, resilient supply chains, innovation and sustainable development.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “In an op-ed with PM Ulf Kristersson, reflected on how India and Sweden are shaping a new era of cooperation. From green transition to supply chains, the India-Sweden partnership is guided by innovation, sustainability and shared prosperity for the people of our nations.”

The op-ed, titled “India and Sweden: Delivering Growth, Resilience and Sustainability… Together”, highlights the growing strategic convergence between the two countries at a time of rising geopolitical uncertainty, energy insecurity and global economic fragmentation.

The two leaders stressed that climate action and economic growth must go hand in hand, describing sustainable development as “the defining economic and political task of our times.” They underlined the importance of strengthening international cooperation and reforming global governance institutions to reflect present-day realities.

The article noted that India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies while simultaneously pursuing one of the world’s largest renewable energy transitions. PM Modi and Swedish PM Kristersson highlighted India’s goals of becoming a developed nation by 2047 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

The leaders also pointed to Sweden’s achievements in climate action, noting that the country’s electric grid is now 98 per cent fossil-free and emissions have declined significantly since 1990 even as the Swedish economy expanded.

Highlighting bilateral cooperation, the two Prime Ministers referred to the Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT), jointly launched by India and Sweden in 2019 with United Nations support. They said the initiative has helped bring industrial decarbonisation and low-carbon technologies to the centre of global climate discussions.

Calling for greater global collaboration, the leaders urged countries to move from “words to action” by accelerating clean technology partnerships, sustainable finance, industrial pilot projects and resilient supply chains. They also invited more countries, particularly Nordic nations, to join the effort through 2030.

The op-ed stressed that no country can independently secure every critical technology, mineral or industrial input, and that climate change solutions must be global in nature.

Describing the partnership as an opportunity to shape “a new era of industrial cooperation,” PM Modi and Swedish PM Kristersson reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing a sustainable and resilient future through collaboration rather than fragmentation.
