Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday paid tribute to Raja Ram Mohan Roy on his birth anniversary, saying his ideologies and ideals would continue to guide the nation towards social awakening and nation-building.
In a post on X, Shah described Raja Ram Mohan Roy as a pioneer of the Indian Renaissance and credited him with fighting social evils, superstition and inequality while laying the foundations of modern India.
“On the birth anniversary of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the pioneer of the Indian Renaissance, I offer him millions of salutations. Through the establishment of the Brahmo Samaj, Raja Ram Mohan Roy awakened people against social superstitions, blind faith, and inequalities. At the same time, through ‘Gaudiya Vyakarana’, he endowed the Bengali language with new ideologies and intellectual directions,” Shah wrote.
He added that Roy’s contributions to education, social reform and public administration had strengthened the foundation of modern India and would continue to inspire future generations.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari also paid homage to the social reformer, describing his work as significant for modern India.
“The work of the great social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy Ji, known as the father of modern India, is significant. On his birth anniversary today, humble salutations to him,” Gadkari said in a post on X.
Yogi Adityanath also remembered Roy and highlighted his contribution to promoting rational thinking and modern education.
In a message on X, Adityanath said Raja Ram Mohan Roy led society “from superstition towards reason, from regressive customs towards progressive consciousness” and that his contribution to modern education would continue to inspire the nation.
Raja Ram Mohan Roy, born on May 22, 1772, in Radhanagar in Bengal, was a prominent social reformer, scholar and founder of the Brahmo Samaj. Often referred to as the “Father of Modern India”, he played a key role in the 19th-century Indian Renaissance and advocated reforms in religion, education and social practices.
His contributions extended across social justice, journalism, public administration and education, making him one of the foremost voices for progressive change in India.
