12 years of Modi govt: Record fertilizer output strengthens India’s farm security

India has sharply boosted domestic fertilizer production over the past 12 years while building record stocks for the upcoming Kharif season, helping shield farmers from global supply disruptions and price shocks, the Centre said on Sunday.

According to the Department of Fertilizers, six new urea plants have been commissioned since 2014, adding 76.2 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of annual capacity, with two more plants set to come on stream soon. Urea production rose from 225 LMT in 2014-15 to a record 314.07 LMT in 2023-24 and remained above 306 LMT in 2024-25. Production of phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilizers also touched a record 211.22 LMT in 2024-25, up from 159.54 LMT a decade earlier.

The government said it moved quickly to tackle disruptions caused by conflicts in West Asia and delays in global shipping routes by securing alternative supply channels and coordinating with international producers. As a result, fertilizer availability for Kharif 2026 remains comfortable, with stocks of nearly 196 LMT already in place against an estimated seasonal requirement of 383.9 LMT — more than 51% of projected demand.

The Centre also highlighted that fertilizer prices for farmers have remained unchanged despite soaring global rates. A 45-kg bag of urea continues to be sold at ₹266.50, while a 50-kg bag of DAP is available at ₹1,350 through government subsidies.

At the same time, the push towards sustainable farming has gathered pace. Sales of organic alternatives such as Fortified Organic Manure, Liquid FOM and Phosphate-Rich Organic Manure increased seven-fold in 2025-26 compared with the previous year, while green manuring was taken up across 1.84 lakh hectares under the guidance of Krishi Vigyan Kendras.

The government said higher domestic production, strategic imports and strong reserves have ensured uninterrupted fertilizer supplies, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening India’s drive towards self-reliance in the sector.
