Ahead of 12th Yoga Day, Army conducts wellness sessions in different North-eastern states

As part of the run-up to the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21, the Indian Army, in collaboration with civil authorities, has been conducting yoga and wellness sessions across several North-eastern states to promote physical fitness, mental well-being and community participation, officials said on Monday.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said the Spearhead Division under the Spear Corps organised a yoga session for soldiers on the banks of Pasang Sonam Lake in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi-Yomi district. The event formed part of the month-long celebrations leading up to International Yoga Day 2026.

Located at an altitude of nearly 9,000 feet, the venue provided a unique setting for troops deployed in forward areas to participate in yoga postures, breathing exercises and meditation techniques.

According to the Army, the high-altitude session underscored the importance of yoga in maintaining physical fitness, mental resilience and emotional balance, particularly for personnel operating in remote and challenging terrain. The programme also focused on enhancing flexibility, concentration, stress management and overall well-being while fostering camaraderie among troops.

Lt Col Rawat said the event reflected the Army’s continued emphasis on holistic wellness, discipline and operational readiness. It also highlighted the commitment of soldiers stationed in border areas to national initiatives such as International Yoga Day.

In Tripura, the Red Shield Division under the Spear Corps, in association with the civil administration, organised a yoga session at the historic Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala as part of the pre-Yoga Day outreach programme.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from Army personnel and aimed to encourage the adoption of yoga as a means of promoting a healthy lifestyle and mental well-being.

A defence spokesperson said the session, held against the backdrop of one of Tripura’s most prominent cultural landmarks, symbolised the convergence of India’s ancient yogic traditions and the rich cultural heritage of the Northeast.

The programme included yoga asanas, pranayama exercises and meditation practices designed to improve physical health, emotional stability and resilience. Participants were encouraged to incorporate yoga into their daily routines to achieve holistic wellness and manage stress effectively.

Officials said the initiative reflects the Indian Army’s ongoing commitment to promoting wellness, social cohesion and cultural integration through community-oriented activities. The events concluded with messages of peace, harmony and collective well-being, in keeping with the spirit of International Yoga Day.
