Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said the proposed Koteshwar Road-Amdavad Airport Metro corridor will significantly improve connectivity to key infrastructure hubs in Ahmedabad, including the airport and the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, while enhancing urban mobility across the city.
“Koteshwar Road-Amdavad Airport Metro Corridor will enhance connectivity to the airport and Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, strengthening seamless urban mobility,” Vaishnaw said in a post on X.
The remarks come a day after the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project.
The approved corridor will span 6.032 km and include five stations — four elevated and one underground. The stations proposed under the project are Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport.
According to an official release, the total project cost, including interest during construction (IDC), is estimated at Rs 2,169.04 crore.
Upon completion of Phase 2(A), the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network will expand to 77.63 km of operational metro connectivity.
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi said Ahmedabad’s urban transformation would gain further momentum through the metro expansion, highlighting its role in improving connectivity, reducing congestion and supporting sustainable development.
“The Cabinet’s approval for Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project will strengthen connectivity, particularly to the airport, thus making travel faster and more convenient. This expansion will reduce congestion, create employment opportunities and contribute to sustainable urban growth,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
The new metro corridor is expected to provide seamless connectivity between the airport and key residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient mass transit access. It will also integrate with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro corridor, improving accessibility across the urban region.
Officials said the project is expected to support economic activity, tourism and urban development by linking major transport and commercial hubs. The corridor will also improve connectivity to the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, with sports infrastructure in the area likely to be further developed ahead of the proposed World Police Games 2029 and Commonwealth Games 2030.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister, also approved the construction of the Central Government General Pool Office Accommodation (CGGPOA) complex in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. The project aims to meet the growing demand for office space by housing various Central government offices under one roof.
