Delhi-NCR woke up to a cloudy and humid morning on Tuesday, with light winds offering the possibility of relief after days of intense heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rainfall, dust storms and gusty winds in parts of the National Capital Region as the southwest monsoon continues to advance across northern India.
The IMD said monsoon activity has intensified over large parts of the country, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several states. Weather advisories have been issued for multiple regions, with heavy rainfall and wind speeds of up to 70 kmph likely in isolated areas.
Changing weather conditions are expected across Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and several other states as monsoon activity gathers momentum.
In the national capital, the maximum temperature is expected to settle around 39 degrees Celsius, though conditions are likely to become more favourable in the coming days with increased rainfall.
Parts of Delhi and adjoining areas, including Noida, received light showers and isolated thunderstorms on Monday evening, bringing temporary relief from the prolonged spell of hot and humid weather.
Despite the improving conditions, the IMD has warned that isolated pockets of Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh may continue to experience heatwave conditions on June 30. However, it expects maximum temperatures across northwest India to decline gradually by 4-5 degrees Celsius by July 4 as monsoon winds strengthen and rainfall becomes more widespread.
In Uttar Pradesh, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in several districts, including Lucknow, Meerut, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Agra, Mathura, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur and Muzaffarnagar. Residents have been advised to remain cautious amid the possibility of lightning, cloudy skies and intermittent showers.
Bihar is also expected to witness active monsoon conditions, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast for Patna, Gaya, Nawada, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Bhagalpur, Katihar and several other districts. In isolated areas, wind speeds may reach 65-70 kmph, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay alert and monitor weather updates.
