Delhi Speaker to address Commonwealth parliamentary meet today

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta will address the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-II North Zone Conference in Chandigarh on Monday.

The two-day conference, themed “Role of Aware Society and Legislators in Realising Future Challenges and the Goal of Viksit Bharat 2047”, is being held on June 8 and 9 at the Haryana Legislative Assembly, according to an official statement.

The regional conclave will bring together Speakers, Presiding Officers and legislators from across northern India to discuss the role of legislatures in advancing the vision of a developed India by 2047. Deliberations will focus on strengthening parliamentary institutions, modernising legislative practices and enhancing democratic cooperation among states.

The conference is also expected to facilitate discussions on emerging socio-economic challenges and governance strategies required to address the evolving needs of a rapidly developing nation. Participants will exchange views on improving citizen engagement and strengthening public participation in the legislative process.

Representing the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Gupta will take part in the high-level discussions and share perspectives on citizen empowerment and inclusive governance. The event aims to promote the exchange of parliamentary best practices and develop a roadmap for addressing regional issues through effective legislative action.

Earlier, Gupta joined Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the launch of the inaugural issue of Vidhan-Chetna, a quarterly journal of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The event also marked the release of the proceedings of the Central Legislative Assembly (1924–1930), published in 89 volumes.

Speaking on the occasion, Gupta said the initiative served as an important link between India’s parliamentary heritage and its evolving legislative framework. He added that preserving institutional history while encouraging contemporary democratic discourse remains essential for strengthening legislative institutions.
