strong winds in 11 districts of Tamil Nadu | heavy rain | India Meteorological Department (IMD)

Heavy rain, gusty winds likely in 11 TN districts; wet spell to continue for a week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds in 11 districts of Tamil Nadu over the next two days, with widespread rain expected to continue across the state and adjoining Union Territories for at least a week.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), an active low-pressure area extending from the central Bay of Bengal to coastal Karnataka through parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and interior Karnataka is influencing weather conditions across southern India.

The weather system is expected to bring continued rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. The IMD has forecast heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds on Thursday and Friday in the hilly and adjoining regions of Tirunelveli and Coimbatore districts, as well as Kanyakumari, The Nilgiris, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, Salem and Ranipet districts.

Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas, particularly those living near hill slopes and low-lying regions, to remain alert as intermittent spells of heavy rain and strong winds may disrupt normal life and transportation.

In the northern coastal districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely on Thursday.

While widespread flooding is not expected, the weather department said localised waterlogging in urban areas cannot be ruled out if intense rainfall occurs over a short period.

The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall on Friday in Dindigul, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Theni, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts as moisture-laden winds continue to strengthen the prevailing weather system over southern India.

Meteorologists said the current weather pattern is consistent with an active southwest monsoon phase affecting peninsular India. The interaction between the low-pressure area and favourable wind conditions is expected to sustain rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu in the coming days.

The IMD has advised fishermen, farmers and residents in rain-prone regions to closely monitor official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions. Disaster management authorities and local administrations are also keeping a close watch on the evolving weather situation as the state prepares for another spell of widespread rainfall.
