PM Modi, EU leaders review ties at G7 Summit, push for early implementation of FTA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held talks with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, reviewing the progress in India-European Union ties and discussing key regional and global developments.

Sharing details of the meeting on X, Prime Minister Modi said: “It was wonderful meeting European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Evian earlier today. At the start of this year, India was proud to host them for our Republic Day celebrations. This has been a great time for India-EU ties as we have concluded the Free Trade Agreement.”

He added, “During our talks, we discussed how to further deepen economic linkages in the times to come. Our growing cooperation can play an important role in strengthening peace, stability and prosperity in today’s global environment.”

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the leaders recalled the 16th India-EU Summit held in India in January this year and welcomed the significant advances made in the bilateral relationship. They described the conclusion of negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a historic milestone and stressed the need for its early signing and implementation.

The leaders noted that the agreement would unlock new opportunities for trade and investment and contribute to diversifying global supply chains amid prevailing geopolitical uncertainties.

They also reviewed progress under the Joint India-EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda endorsed earlier this year and expressed confidence that it would further deepen the strategic partnership and deliver transformative outcomes for both sides.

Exchanging views on regional and international developments, the leaders welcomed recent developments in West Asia and reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting a resilient multipolar global order that supports peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development, the foreign ministry said.
