PM Modi, Seychelles Opposition leader reaffirm broad support for bilateral ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday met Seychelles National Assembly Leader of the Opposition Bernard Georges and discussed various aspects of the India-Seychelles partnership, while thanking him for his remarks during the Prime Minister’s address to the country’s Parliament.

Sharing details of the meeting on X, PM Modi said, “Had a good meeting with Mr. Bernard Georges, Leader of the Opposition in the Seychelles National Assembly. Discussed various subjects relating to the India-Seychelles partnership. Expressed gratitude for his warm remarks at the National Assembly earlier today, after my address. Glad to see the India-Seychelles relations having broad support across all sections of society in Seychelles.”

Earlier, while welcoming the Prime Minister during a special session of the National Assembly, Georges said PM Modi’s visit would inspire Seychelles’ political leadership to look at India as an example of “unity in diversity” despite political differences at home.

Acknowledging the political divide in Seychelles, Georges noted that the opposition would not participate in the country’s Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations. However, he stressed that India and Seychelles have maintained a balanced and respectful partnership built on mutual trust over the past five decades.

Expressing gratitude for India’s continued support across multiple sectors, Georges said New Delhi’s assistance had contributed significantly to Seychelles’ development. He voiced hope that PM Modi’s visit would encourage political leaders in the island nation to strengthen democratic values and national unity.

Highlighting the deep people-to-people ties between the two countries, Georges said individuals of Indian origin play a significant role in Seychelles’ economy, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, while Indian nationals and entrepreneurs of Gujarati origin have made notable contributions to the construction sector.

He also pointed to the close cultural and political links between the two nations, noting that several senior government leaders in Seychelles have Indian roots.

Referring to the Seychelles-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, Georges said parliamentary exchanges have further strengthened bilateral cooperation.

Calling Prime Minister Modi’s address to the National Assembly a significant occasion, Georges said the Indian Prime Minister’s interaction with one of the world’s smallest legislatures underscored the universal values of democracy and the enduring importance of parliamentary governance.
