Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday released the book “VIP Culture in India: Power, Privilege and the Distance from Democracy” at the Uprashtrapati Bhavan, saying the subject explored by the authors touches the very core of democratic governance and public life in the country.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said the Constitution envisions a society founded on justice, equality, liberty and fraternity, and stressed that democracy thrives when public office is regarded as a responsibility rather than a privilege. He noted that the relationship between citizens and those entrusted with public authority remains central to the health of a democracy.
Drawing from the teachings of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar, V-P Radhakrishnan said true leadership is defined by accessibility, compassion and accountability. Leaders who remain approachable and respectful towards the people, he added, earn lasting trust and admiration.
The Vice-President said the themes discussed in the book align closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of public service. Referring to the Prime Minister’s decision to abolish red beacon lights for dignitaries and his recent move to delay his departure to avoid inconveniencing NEET aspirants due to traffic restrictions, he said such actions reflect citizen-first governance.
Recalling the Prime Minister’s statement that “Every Indian is special. Every Indian is a VIP,” the Vice-President said public authority exists to serve citizens and reiterated that “Seva is the ultimate Dharma.”
He also praised the book’s references to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and other leaders known for their simplicity and commitment to public service. The Vice-President noted that the authors had enriched their analysis through references to India’s civilisational heritage, including the Upanishads, Ramcharitmanas, the teachings of Lord Buddha and the Panchatantra.
Calling for a renewed commitment to the values that define the Republic, V-P Radhakrishnan emphasised equality before the law, dignity of every citizen and leadership guided by humility and responsibility. He said the true measure of leadership lies in the trust it earns and the service it renders.
The book has been authored by former Rajya Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh Nabam Rebia and co-author Sandeep Kumar. Among those present at the event were former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, former Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya W.R. Kharlukhi, and the authors.
