England’s Henderson hospitalised after wrist injury during World Cup celebrations

England midfielder Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital after suffering what manager Thomas Tuchel described as a “really bad” wrist injury while celebrating England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Monday.

Henderson, who did not feature in the match, appeared to land awkwardly after falling from the advertising hoardings during the post-match celebrations and was stretchered off the field.

“Jordan Henderson just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” Tuchel told BBC One after the match. “It’s quite a serious injury and it doesn’t fit the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.”

Despite being reduced to 10 men in the 54th minute following defender Jarell Quansah’s red card, England held on to secure a memorable win at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

“I am very proud. We needed everything. It was super difficult,” Tuchel said. “Whenever we felt we could seize the momentum, we suffered setbacks. That shows the mentality of this team. When the going gets tough, they never give up and never lose belief.”

The England coach described the contest as an “iconic match in an iconic stadium”, adding that his side had overcome immense adversity through resilience and determination.

England will next face Norway in the quarterfinals after the Scandinavian side advanced with a win over Brazil. England have dominated the head-to-head rivalry, winning all four of the teams’ meetings between 1937 and 1966 by a combined score of 20-2.
