Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the prevailing flood situation in various parts of Assam came up for discussion during his meeting with the state’s Members of Parliament and assured that the Centre was working closely with the Assam government to assist those affected.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he prayed for the safety and well-being of the people.
“Met MPs from Assam and discussed the prevailing flood situation in various parts of the state. The Centre is working closely with the Assam Government in assisting those affected. I pray for everyone’s safety and well-being,” PM Modi wrote.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Prime Minister Modi for personally monitoring the flood situation in the state, while the Indian Air Force (IAF) said it had rescued 458 stranded people and delivered over nine tonnes of relief supplies across flood-affected areas of Assam and Nagaland over the past 10 days.
In a post on X, Sarma said, “Adarniya Pradhan Mantri ji, thank you for your personal attention to this matter and for taking on-ground updates regarding the #AssamFloods. Under your leadership, we are working on a war footing to provide relief to our people, and so far we have been able to reach every affected village.”
The Chief Minister added that power supply had been restored in most flood-affected areas, stating, “Power has also been restored to the majority of the flood-affected areas, and all those rescued are sheltered in relief camps with proper food, medical facilities and children’s areas.
“We will keep working 24×7 to ensure a swift response during this crisis and thereafter present a comprehensive rehabilitation roadmap to assist our people, which shall be rooted in the principles of Jan Bhagidari. I once again express my gratitude to Adarniya @narendramodi ji for closely monitoring the situation and offering all assistance to us,” he said.
Meanwhile, the IAF said it continues to play a key role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations despite challenging weather conditions.
“The Indian Air Force continues to demonstrate its rapid response in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations across the flood-affected regions of Assam and Nagaland. Over the past 10 days, IAF helicopters have rescued and safely evacuated 458 stranded citizens and delivered over nine tonnes of essential relief supplies,” the force said in a post on X, adding that operations were being carried out in close coordination with the Indian Army and civil authorities.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the flood situation in the state remained grim on Tuesday, with more than 4.45 lakh people affected across six districts, including Sivasagar and Charaideo.
A total of 631 villages remain inundated, while relief operations continue through 184 relief camps and distribution centres sheltering nearly 28,700 people. Authorities said no human casualties had been reported so far, although extensive damage had been caused to homes, roads, schools, agricultural land and livestock across the affected districts.
