India recorded its highest-ever monthly electric vehicle (EV) retail sales in July 2026, with registrations reaching 3,27,901 units, a growth of over 66 per cent year-on-year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The strong performance meant that nearly one in every eight vehicles sold in the country during the month was electric, reflecting the growing adoption of EVs across segments.
FADA also noted that concerns over potential disruptions arising from the West Asia crisis, which could push global oil prices higher and fuel inflation, may further influence consumer preference towards electric mobility.
Commenting on the performance, FADA Vice President Sai Giridhar said, “India has never bought more electric vehicles in a month than it did in July’26 — 3,27,901 units, up over 66 per cent year-on-year — with nearly one in eight vehicles retailed now electric.”
Two-wheelers and three-wheelers lead growth
Electric two-wheelers crossed the two lakh-unit milestone for the first time, accounting for 11.2 per cent of total two-wheeler retail sales in July, up from 10.6 per cent in June and 7.7 per cent a year earlier.
Electric three-wheelers further strengthened their dominance, with their market share rising to 65.1 per cent, compared to 62.7 per cent in June and 60.3 per cent in July 2025.
“Every category told the same story in its own way. Two-Wheelers crossed the two-lakh mark for the first time, at a record 11.2 per cent share. Three-Wheelers, at 65.1 per cent, have made electric the default, not the alternative,” Giridhar said.
Commercial and passenger EVs also post gains
The commercial vehicle segment continued to witness increasing electrification, with EVs accounting for 3.57 per cent of retail sales in July, up from 3.54 per cent in June and 1.65 per cent in the same month last year.
“Commercial Vehicles nearly tripled to a record 3.57 per cent share — fleet electrification has moved from pilots to purchase orders,” Giridhar noted.
Electric passenger vehicles also posted robust growth, with retail sales increasing 83 per cent year-on-year. Their market share remained steady at 7.9 per cent, unchanged from June but significantly higher than 5.1 per cent in July 2025.
“Passenger EVs grew 83 per cent over last year, held back only by supply of in-demand models, which we urge OEMs to resolve before the festive rush,” he added.
Highlighting the broader trend, Giridhar said the transition to electric mobility was now visible across the country.
“The EV transition has stopped being a forecast. It is now a showroom reality — and Bharat is driving it,” he said.
