Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely to occur in Chengalpattu, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts on Wednesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre said, as a weak low-pressure circulation persists over the coastal belt of Tamil Nadu.
In its latest weather bulletin, the department said the low-level atmospheric circulation was likely to create favourable conditions for rainfall across several parts of the state.
Moderate rain is also likely at isolated places in Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts. Thunder and lightning may accompany the rainfall in some areas.
The weather department advised residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near weak structures.
While coastal and some southern districts are expected to receive rain, interior parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience a rise in daytime temperatures. Maximum temperatures in interior districts could remain up to four degrees Celsius above normal over the next four days, resulting in hot and uncomfortable conditions, particularly during the afternoon.
People, especially children, senior citizens and those working outdoors, have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
In Chennai and its suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy, with moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning likely at some places during the evening or night.
Sudden downpours could cause waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect traffic movement, particularly during peak hours. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution as visibility may be reduced during intense spells of rain.
The weather department is monitoring the atmospheric circulation and is expected to issue further updates if the system strengthens or rainfall activity increases. Local authorities in the districts under the heavy-rain forecast have also been advised to remain alert and take precautionary measures as necessary.
Residents have been urged to follow official weather bulletins and avoid relying on unverified information circulated on social media.
