Himachal Pradesh: Flash floods disrupt road connectivity in Lahaul-Spiti’s Mayar Valley, Chowkhang Naingar

Flash floods in the Karpat Nallah in Miyar Valley and the Gawadi Nallah in the Chowkhang Naingar area of tribal Lahaul-Spiti district have disrupted road connectivity, officials said.

Lahaul-Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana said the road in Karpat village was blocked following the flooding. However, flood-control measures undertaken earlier in Miyar Valley helped protect the village to a large extent.

“The administration and concerned departments have been directed to conduct an on-site inspection and take appropriate action,” Rana said.

She said efforts had been made to restore the Chowkhang Naingar road, but repeated flooding prevented the route from being reopened. “Restoration work will resume on Wednesday,” she added.

The MLA said the administration and concerned departments had also been instructed to assess the damage caused by the floods.

Himachal Pradesh has continued to be affected by heavy rain, landslides and flash floods during the ongoing monsoon season.
According to the latest State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) data released on Tuesday evening, 88 roads remained blocked across the state as of 5 pm, down from 105 in the morning following restoration efforts.

Mandi was the worst-affected district with 32 blocked roads, followed by Kullu with 25 and Sirmaur with 10. Shimla and Kangra had six blocked roads each, while Chamba and Una had four each and Lahaul-Spiti had one.

Power restoration also progressed, with the number of disrupted distribution transformers (DTRs) falling from 36 in the morning to 12 by evening. Hamirpur accounted for nine affected transformers, while Shimla had two and Kullu one.

The rainfall also disrupted 19 water-supply schemes across the state, including 12 in Hamirpur, five in Shimla and two in Bilaspur.

The State Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh till August 21, with orange and yellow alerts in place in several districts.
