The Ministry of Power has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours a day to help meet the neighbouring country’s additional power requirements following extensive damage to its hydropower infrastructure caused by recent floods.
Under the approval, India will export power to the Nepal Electricity Authority from September 13 to December 31, 2026, between 00:00 hours and 18:00 hours each day.
India will export up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit transmission line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The quantum of electricity to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December 2026, the Ministry said.
Support for Nepal amid reduced power generation
The recent floods in Nepal have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure, reducing the country’s domestic electricity generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for power.
The approval is expected to help Nepal meet its electricity needs during the difficult period while supporting the country’s power supply and grid requirements.
The move also reinforces the longstanding energy partnership between India and Nepal, with cross-border electricity trade forming an important component of bilateral energy cooperation.
India has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nepal and further strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
