North-East conclave on climate change advocates innovative sustainable solutions The North-East Conclave on Climate Change: Adaptation and Resilience (NCCCAR-2024) convened a diverse array of stakeholders from all Northeastern states. Hosted by the Department of Environmental Science at Tezpur University under the aegis of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the two-day conclave aimed to catalyze the development of innovative solutions tailored to the region’s unique climate challenges. Dr. Anita Gupta, Head of the Climate, Energy and Sustainable Technology (CEST) Division at DST, underscored the urgency of addressing climate change issues by highlighting the importance of the “5 E’s”: ecology, environment, economy, ecosystem, and energy. Emphasizing the vulnerability of Northeast India to climate risks, Dr. Gupta stressed the need for comprehensive research and collaboration among research institutions to support the formulation of effective adaptation policies and programs. Professor N H Ravindranath from IISc Bangalore reiterated the Northeast’s susceptibility to climate risks based on DST-supported research. He called for enhanced collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders to bolster climate change research and capacity building efforts in the region. The Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, and Dr. Susheela Negi, Senior Director of the Climate, Energy and Sustainable Technology Division at DST, highlighted the pivotal role of research institutions and government initiatives such as the National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change (NMSKCC) and the National Mission on Sustainable Habitat and Ecosystems (NMSHE) in addressing climate change challenges. The conclave served as a platform for scientists, academicians, policymakers, and experts to exchange knowledge and ideas on mitigating climate change-induced impacts such as habitat loss, declining crop yields, and altered water cycles. A book titled ‘Compendium on Climate Change: Adaptation and Resilience in Northeast India’ was released during the event, showcasing the collective efforts of stakeholders in understanding and addressing climate change in the region. Prof. K.
