Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday released the final series of The Collected Works of Madan Mohan Malaviya (Volumes 12 to 23) at a ceremony held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, marking the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya.
With the release of the 12-volume final series, the ambitious bilingual publication project documenting the life and legacy of Mahamana Malaviya has been completed. The project was jointly undertaken by the Mahamana Malaviya Mission and the Publications Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The first series of 11 volumes was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25, 2023.
The newly released volumes offer an unprecedented insight into the multidimensional life of one of the foremost architects of modern India, spanning politics, law, education, industry, and spirituality. The second series alone comprises nearly 3,500 pages of meticulously researched and compiled original documents sourced from across the country.
A key highlight of the collection is the inclusion of all 200 speeches delivered by Malaviya in the Central Legislative Assembly, underscoring his stature as a distinguished parliamentarian. The volumes also document interviews conducted by him with 135 industrialists during his tenure as a member of the Indian Industrial Commission, providing valuable insights into early industrial policy debates in India.
The collection further includes his speeches at the Second Round Table Conference and rare material related to the Poona Pact, offering fresh perspectives on significant moments in India’s freedom movement. Malaviya’s legal legacy is captured through records of 170 cases argued by him in the Allahabad High Court, including his notable role in securing justice for the accused in the Chauri Chaura case.
In addition, the volumes shed light on Malaviya’s spiritual and social philosophy, documenting his association with the Sanatana Dharma Mahasabha and his Geeta Pravachan delivered at Banaras Hindu University.
The release ceremony was attended by Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Coal, Mines and Steel Anurag Singh Thakur as guests of honour.
Padma Bhushan awardee Ram Bahadur Rai, who led the research and compilation of the original documents, and Bhupendra Kainthola, Principal Director General of the Publications Division, were also present at the event.
The final series includes volumes on Malaviya’s political speeches, legislative interventions, industrial advocacy, legal career, and spiritual thought, bringing together a comprehensive record of his contributions from 1886 to 1946. The completion of Mahamana Vangmay is expected to serve as an invaluable resource for scholars, researchers, and future generations seeking to understand the life and legacy of one of India’s most revered national leaders.
