India’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of India’s Governor Shaktikanta Das, has been rated ‘A+’ in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2023. The RBI Governor has been placed at the top of the list of three central bank governors who have been rated ‘A+’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and congratulated the RBI governor, saying, “This is a proud moment for India, reflecting our financial leadership on the global stage. His dedication and vision continue to strengthen our nation’s growth trajectory.”

The report card has been published annually by Global Finance since 1994. It grades the central bank governors of 101 key countries, territories, and districts. Governor Das is followed by Switzerland’s Thomas J. Jordan and Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Hong.

Grades are allotted on a scale from A to F considering the success of inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability, and interest rate management. (An ‘A’ represents an excellent performance, down through an ‘F’ for outright failure.)

The statement issued by Global Finance said, “Global Finance’s annual Central Banker Report Cards celebrate those bank governors whose strategies outperformed their peers through originality, creativity, and tenacity.”

The governors who earned an ‘A’ grade are Brazil’s Roberto Campos Neto, Israel’s Amir Yaron, and Mauritius’s Harvesh Kumar Seegolam, among the governors of New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, Taiwan, and Uruguay.

In addition, Governor of Colombia Leonardo Villar, Governor of the Dominican Republic Hector Valdez Albizu, and Governor of Iceland Asgeir Jonsson, among others.
