The 16th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference & Exhibition 2023, the advancement of sustainable urban mobility solutions, concluded on October 29 with the concluding session. The 2023 UMI exhibition was inaugurated by Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs on 27 October.
This exhibition and conference lasted for three days, in which about 22 companies from metro rail companies, and public and private sectors participated. Jabalpur City Transport Services Limited was honored for its innovative financing mechanism. Kochi City was awarded the best green transport initiative for the water metro project of Kochi Metro Rail Limited.
Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Manoj Joshi expressed his views during the concluding session on the major topics, discussions, and exchange of ideas during the entire event. He stressed the need for Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and the challenges around it. Joshi during the concluding session spoke about the importance of smart cards as a convenient and efficient means of payment for regular commuters. He said that the government is working on the adoption of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). It has the ability to enhance the interphase of various modes. He stressed the need for innovative funding mechanisms and public-private partnerships to meet the growing demands of urban transport infrastructure.
He highlighted the importance of an effective fare collection system in urban transport, he said that good fare collection is most important for a viable transport system. He also underlined the importance of harnessing the potential of the real estate sector around the roads for better financial feasibility of these projects.
Joshi stressed the need for innovative funding mechanisms and public-private partnerships to meet the growing demands of urban transport infrastructure.
Electric vehicles necessary to reduce emissions
The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) was another important topic of discussion at the UMI exhibition and conference. Joshi highlighted the importance of adopting electric vehicles to reduce emissions and encouraged urban areas to invest in electric vehicle infrastructure. At the closing meeting, awards were presented to the winning state and city officials for “Excellence and Best Practice Projects in Urban Transport”, recommended by the Award Selection Committee and recommended by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
